Five
Seventy-seven villas, forty-four of them overwater and thirty-three on land. That is the cleanest published split of any resort here, and it matters more than it sounds, because most resorts will not tell you.
It opened in 2016, with its grand opening that November, and it sits 160 kilometres from Malé, which makes it the most remote resort on this list. The transfer is a mandatory shared seaplane, about forty-five minutes, at 870 US dollars per person round trip.
That distance comes with a rule you have to plan your flights around. The resort states that any international flight arriving after 15:30 requires an overnight stay in Malé before you can fly out. This is not St. Regis being awkward. Seaplanes in the Maldives fly from sunrise to sunset only, and Trans Maldivian Airways gives the same 15:30 guidance for a same-day connection. If your flight from Europe lands at six in the evening, you are paying for a night in Malé whatever the resort brochure implies.
Seven restaurants and bars, an Iridium Spa, a complimentary children's club. No Michelin stars and none claimed. Book it if you want the villa split published before you arrive and you can land in Malé before lunch.

Four
Ninety-four villas: seventy overwater, fifty-six of them at 108 square metres without a pool and fourteen at 126 with one, and twenty-four on land. The largest land villa, The Retreat, runs 1,377 square metres as a three-bedroom and 1,550 as a four. It opened in 2011.
It carries the hardest conservation numbers of any resort on this list, and they are measured rather than asserted. The Maldives Underwater Initiative is based here with the Manta Trust, the Blue Marine Foundation and the Olive Ridley Project: 200,591 square metres of protected seagrass meadow, a 42.87 per cent increase in meadow size between 2020 and 2022, and 4,666 sea turtle sightings in 2022. Most resorts offer you a resident marine biologist. This one publishes its results.
The transfer is where you need to read carefully, because the sources disagree and both are probably right. Six Senses' own factsheet says a sixty-five-minute seaplane from Malé. The Maldives Airports Company describes the route as a forty-minute domestic flight to Kadhdhoo, one or two a day, then about fifteen minutes by speedboat. Those are two different routings to the same island, and the Kadhdhoo one is what rescues a late arrival, since it does not depend on daylight.
One thing to know before you book the atoll rather than the resort. Laamu is in the south, and the southern atolls average 2,218 millimetres of rain a year against 1,779 in the north. If you are going in the wet season, that gradient is real.

Three
A hundred villas, opened on 1 June 2021, Forbes Five-Star, and the only resort here where the arrival time does not constrain the flights you book.
The transfer is a forty-five-minute speedboat, and it runs twenty-four hours. Malé is 45 kilometres away. That single operational fact is worth more than most of the amenities on this list: it means a late-evening landing goes straight to the resort instead of into a hotel beside the airport. The published cost is 1,027 US dollars net per adult and 514 per child round trip, including the ten per cent service charge and seventeen per cent government tax. Note what that does to the usual assumption. A speedboat here costs more than the mandatory seaplane at St. Regis Vommuli.
The spa is a ring set over the water with nine treatment rooms, a spa suite with its own relaxation lounge, salon and boutique. Seven restaurants and bars.
A correction, because this one circulates. One of the restaurants is called Summer Pavilion, which is also the name of Marriott's Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant in Singapore. They are not the same kitchen and no star attaches to the Maldives room. The resort does not claim one; listicles do it for them.

Two
A hundred and three villas on a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, open since November 2006, thirty-five minutes by seaplane from Malé.
This is the resort that disproves the thing everyone believes about overwater villas. A Sunrise or Sunset Water Villa with Pool here is 90 square metres inside with 183 outside. A Beach Villa with Pool is 137 inside with 260 outside. The beach villa is half as big again, and it is not the more expensive category. Overwater is the default at most resorts in this country, not the premium: seventy of ninety-four villas at Six Senses Laamu and forty-four of seventy-seven at St. Regis Vommuli sit over the water. Decide on square metres and shade, not on the photograph.
The marine work is long-running and specific. Four Seasons planted its 9,000th coral frame in March 2025 across its three Maldives properties, with Reefscapers, work that traces back to the 1997-98 bleaching event. There is a Marine Discovery Centre with resident biologists, a turtle rehabilitation centre, and the Maldivian Manta Conservation Programme founded here by Guy Stevens.
One thing to read properly. Blu Beach Club serves a menu by Nino Di Costanzo, who holds two Michelin stars at Danì Maison on Ischia. It is a residency that began in November 2024, not a permanent kitchen, and between his visits the menu is served to two tables of four an evening. The last seaplane out is around three in the afternoon; a late arrival overnights at Four Seasons Kuda Huraa and flies in the morning.

One
On 10 August 2026 Soneva Jani became the first resort in the Maldives to achieve OECM status, the international designation for an Other Effective area-based Conservation Measure, covering 0.41 square kilometres of reef, beach and mangrove on the eastern side of Medhufaru, with annual monitoring and a five-year review. Nobody else in the country has it. That is the reason it is first.
The resort runs about five kilometres. Chapter Two added twenty-seven overwater villas in February 2021, from one to four bedrooms. The one-bedroom Water Reserve with Slide is 555 square metres, with a retractable roof over the master bedroom and a slide into the sea. We are not giving you a total villa count, because Soneva does not publish one we could verify, and the numbers in circulation do not agree.
It also publishes the clearest transfer information in the Maldives, which is why we would send a first-time visitor here. Seaplane: forty minutes, 1,300 US dollars per adult and 650 per child round trip for 2026, rising to 1,340 and 670 in 2027 high season, and they will only fly from sunrise to sunset. For a same-day seaplane your international flight must land in Malé by 15:30; later than that you overnight and take the 09:00. The alternative is a thirty-minute domestic flight to Maafaru and a ten-minute speedboat, at 600 dollars per adult and 300 per child, and Maafaru takes arrivals until eleven at night. Baggage on the seaplane is 20 kilograms checked and 5 in the cabin.
If you land in the evening, book the Maafaru route. It is less than half the price of the seaplane and it is the only way most long-haul arrivals reach a northern atoll on the day they land.

In the Maldives the transfer is not the journey to the holiday. It is the first decision of it, and it sets your flights.

The Maldives Meteorological Service puts the northeast monsoon, the dry season, from January to March, and the southwest monsoon, the wet season, from mid-May to November, with December and April transitional. Temperatures sit between 25 and 32 degrees all year and are warmest in March and April. The figure most articles miss is that rainfall rises as you go south: the northern atolls average 1,779 millimetres a year, the central atolls 1,966 and the southern atolls 2,218. So the atoll matters as well as the month, and a southern resort will see materially more rain in an average year than a northern one. Worth knowing: the Met Service does not publish month-by-month totals, so the monthly figures that circulate elsewhere are not from the official source.
Trans Maldivian Airways does not publish per-person fares, so the only honest answer uses resorts' own published prices. Observed on 9 October 2026: Soneva Jani charges 1,300 US dollars per adult and 650 per child round trip for 2026; The St. Regis Vommuli charges 870 per person for a mandatory shared seaplane. For comparison, the Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands speedboat is 1,027 net per adult and 514 per child, so a boat is not automatically the cheaper option. Seaplanes fly sunrise to sunset only, and TMA advises landing in Malé by 15:30 for a same-day connection. Baggage is 20 kilograms checked plus 5 in the cabin, 32 kilograms maximum per bag, with excess at 5 dollars a kilo.
Decide it on square metres rather than on the photograph. Overwater is the default category at most of these resorts, not the premium one: seventy of ninety-four villas at Six Senses Laamu are overwater, and forty-four of seventy-seven at St. Regis Vommuli. It is frequently the smaller room, too. At Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru a Water Villa with Pool is 90 square metres inside and 183 outside, while a Beach Villa with Pool is 137 and 260. The generalisation does break at the top: Soneva Jani's one-bedroom Water Reserve is 555 square metres, and Six Senses Laamu's largest land villa runs to 1,550. Overwater for the water access and the view, beach for floor area, shade and children, and check the actual figures at the specific resort, because the ranking reverses property by property.
Fewer of the famous ones than you would expect, which is worth knowing before you go looking. Shangri-La is routinely listed as operating here and does not: Shangri-La Villingili in Addu Atoll closed in 2020 and had not reopened as of mid-2024, when the tourism ministry formed a task force about it. Jumeirah Dhevanafushi no longer exists either; Accor took over management in 2017 and it reopened as Raffles Maldives Meradhoo in 2019. The Leading Hotels of the World has only five Maldives members, and none of them is a household name. The large independents, Soneva, Velaa and Cheval Blanc Randheli, are reachable through Virtuoso rather than through Leading Hotels.
