A Jardine Matheson company, now private

Mandarin Oriental is a member of the Jardine Matheson Group, and its own figures describe 46 hotels, 15 residences and 39 exceptional homes across 29 countries and territories. The flagship opened in Hong Kong in 1963 as The Mandarin, and the group has set a target of 100 properties by 2030.

The company ceased to be publicly traded in early 2026, when Jardine Matheson moved to acquire the remaining minority stake in a transaction valuing Mandarin Oriental at around US$4.2 billion.

The one program that genuinely excludes the other

Mandarin Oriental relaunched its guest program, Fans of M.O., in April 2025 and rebuilt it around having no points and no redemptions at all, drawing on how luxury goods brands treat their customers rather than how hotels usually do. It runs across three levels, with the top one by invitation.

The consequence matters on every booking: you take Fans of M.O. benefits or you take Fan Club benefits, not both. This is the only brand we work with where the choice is explicit, and it is a real decision rather than a formality. We go through it with you before booking, and our article on the program sets out how the two compare.

How we decide which side to book

It comes down to what you hold and what you want. A guest with meaningful standing in Fans of M.O. who values the recognition it carries may be better off booking direct; a guest without it is almost always better off on a Fan Club rate, because the amenities arrive immediately rather than being earned.

Length of stay changes the answer too, as does whether you are in a room or a suite. We will tell you when booking direct is the better call, which happens often enough to be worth saying out loud.

What the booking involves

The Fan Club rate matches the best available rate on Mandarin Oriental's own site. There is no markup and no fee: the hotel pays the advisor commission out of its margin.

We flag the reservation to the property before arrival, and at a group this size that note is generally read. Start an enquiry or send a booking you already hold and we will tell you honestly which route is worth taking.
