The parent is not really a hotel company

The Peninsula hotels are operated by The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, founded in 1866. The Kadoorie family has provided its chairmen since 1937, and the company is listed in Hong Kong.

Its other businesses are the surprising part. HSH owns and runs the Peak Tram and the Peak Tower in Hong Kong, The Repulse Bay, and Quail Lodge Golf Club in Carmel, California, alongside a club management arm that runs The Hong Kong Club and the Hong Kong Bankers Club. There are twelve Peninsula hotels in total: six in Asia, three in North America and three in Europe.

No loyalty program, and one honest clarification

The Peninsula runs no points scheme or tier structure, so a PenClub booking costs you nothing in loyalty terms. PenClub is the brand's preferred-partner channel rather than a guest program.

One point we would rather state than let you discover: Peninsula Time, the flexible arrival and departure policy, is not exclusive to PenClub. The Peninsula extends it to guests who book direct or through a preferred travel advisor. What PenClub adds on top is the upgrade confirmed at the time of booking, the daily breakfast, the property credit and the recognition.

A Guinness record, and what it says about the brand

The Peninsula holds the Guinness World Record for the largest hotel Rolls-Royce fleet: 28 cars, all in the brand's dark green, including extended-wheelbase Phantoms in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and Tokyo and two vintage Phantom II Sedanca de Villes from the 1930s.

It reads as a piece of trivia and functions as a statement of method. This is a company that has run the same twelve hotels for a very long time and invests in them rather than in adding more: it has announced no new hotel openings, and has instead approved a renovation program of roughly HK$2.1 billion for Hong Kong and Tokyo.

Twelve hotels, twelve sets of terms

The credit differs by property in both currency and permitted outlets, and the list of what it cannot be spent on differs too: particular restaurants in Hong Kong and Tokyo, the gift shop in Chicago and Beverly Hills, in-room dining in Istanbul. Manila substitutes a different benefit entirely.

We confirm the specifics for your hotel before booking rather than quoting a generic figure. The rate is The Peninsula's own. Start an enquiry or send a booking you already hold.
