A sixteenth-century Benedictine monastery, converted into a private house by Baron Baratta in the 1800s and opened as a hotel in 1901. It sits in the pines above Portofino harbour, reached by a switchback road, with 52 rooms and suites and the five-bedroom Villa Beatrice. Martin Brudnizki reworked the interiors between 2023 and 2024 and left the bones alone, which is the right decision in a building that has been photographed for a century.
It is on this list because of the position. Portofino is a working fishing village of about four hundred people, and the hotel looks down on all of it from inside a garden. You are above the day trippers rather than among them, and the walk down takes ten minutes while the walk back takes twenty, which is the correct ratio for a honeymoon.
Eat on the terrace at La Terrazza and order the trofie with pesto, made with DOP basil from Pra' rather than the supermarket kind. Drink at Baratta Sedici, the onyx-topped bar named for the Baron. The infinity pool looks straight down the coast, and the Dior Spa here is the brand's first permanent one in Italy. Take the boat to San Fruttuoso in the morning, before the harbour fills, because the abbey is only reachable by sea or on foot and both are better early.

Reopened on 17 November 2021 after a four-year rebuild, following hurricane damage that took the original to the ground. Luis Pons redesigned it across 18 acres of private peninsula, with 66 keys, twenty of which have their own pool. The peninsula has water on both sides: Maréchal Bay on one, the Grand Cul-de-Sac lagoon on the other.
That geography is the argument. St Barth is small and social, and almost every hotel on it puts you within earshot of somebody else's lunch. This one is on its own headland, so the only people who walk past your terrace are staff. The lagoon side is shallow, flat and warm, which is where you paddle, and the bay side takes the wind, which is where you sail.
Eat at Beach House St. Barth, which is the social room of the property rather than a formal dining room, and drink at Bar Mélangé. Sense is the largest wellness facility on the island and worth booking on arrival rather than at the end. Do the twenty-minute walk around the point at sunset, because the light comes across the lagoon and there is nobody else on it.

Guests have been arriving here since 1870, which makes it older than the Riviera season itself, and the hotel is the reason the summer season exists at all. The Eden-Roc pavilion stands at the tip of the cape above the water, and the saltwater pool was cut straight into the rock in 1914. There are 33 cabanas along the shoreline and five tennis courts in the pines behind.
It earns its place on a honeymoon list for a reason that sounds trivial and is not: the hotel is on a private cape, so the sea is the property line. You swim off the rocks rather than off a beach shared with a town. The gardens between the villa and the pavilion are large enough that you can walk for twenty minutes and see nobody.
Book Louroc for one dinner, which holds a Michelin star and looks straight down the coast, and eat everything else at the Grill by the pool. Drink at Bar Bellini before dinner. Take a cabana for at least one full day rather than treating the pool as somewhere you pass through, because the whole design of the place assumes you will spend the day at the water and come up for dinner.

Opened in September 2008 on Motu Tehotu, a private islet on the outer reef, with 100 overwater bungalows and seven beachfront villas. The motu faces back across the lagoon to Mount Otemanu, which means the mountain is the view from the bungalow rather than something you go and look at.
Overwater bungalows are the most copied idea in luxury travel and most of them are built too close together, so you can hear the neighbours. Here the bungalows run along the reef in a long line with water between them, and the resort holds the whole motu, so the lagoon in front of you is not shared with another property. That is the difference between the photograph and the stay.
The Ruahatu Lagoon Sanctuary is the thing to do, and it is not a gimmick: it is a working research facility with more than a hundred marine species, a resident marine biologist, and coral grafting you can take part in on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Snorkel it before breakfast while the water is glass. Otherwise the correct plan is to do very little, and the property is built for exactly that.

Opened in 2010, commissioned by King Mohammed VI and built by more than 1,500 Moroccan artisans over several years. It is not a hotel with rooms. It is 53 riads, each one a three-storey house with its own courtyard, its own plunge pool, its own roof terrace and its own butler, arranged as a private medina behind a wall at the edge of the city.
It is our number one because of something you never see, which is the point. Beneath the property runs more than a kilometre of tunnel, and the staff move through it. Housekeeping, room service and maintenance all arrive through a service door at the back of your riad. Nobody crosses your courtyard, nobody passes you in a corridor, and there is no corridor. Every other hotel on this list manages privacy. This one was built so the question never arises.
Eat at Sesamo, which Massimiliano Alajmo oversees, and at La Grande Table Marocaine for the Moroccan side. The spa runs to 2,500 square metres across three floors, built as a white wrought-iron birdcage around a central atrium, and it is worth seeing even if you book nothing. Have breakfast on your own roof terrace rather than in the restaurant, because the Atlas Mountains are visible from up there in the morning and gone by ten.

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on whether the hotel knows. A booking that arrives flagged as a honeymoon, from an advisor the property deals with directly, is the one that gets read before arrival. What that produces varies by house and is never contractual: a better room on the day if one is free, something waiting in the room, a table held at the restaurant that is fully committed. Anyone who promises you a specific upgrade in advance is guessing.
